Built in the 1920s, the Bab Al Bahrain is a national (architectural) symbol and gateway to Manama's historic suq - which has long served as the island's economic, social and cultural hub. Today, its square is one of the few remaining public spaces in Bahrain. The competition seeks to open the debate on the role of public spaces in the Arab World. Thus, local and international architects, urban planners and landscape architects were invited to propose innovative ideas to revitalize Bab Al Bahrain's square. Proposals will be evaluated by an international jury and all entries will be exhibited in-situ at Bab Al Bahrain. Members of the public will be invited to select their preferred submission, with the finalist receiving a People's Choice Award.
